Located in Census Division No. 12, its municipal office is located in the Town of Smoky Lake. == Demographics == As a census subdivision in the 2011 Census, Smoky Lake County had a population of 3,910 living in 1,481 of its 1,920 total dwellings, a 16.5% change from its 2006 population of 3,357. This includes the population of two Métis settlements, Buffalo Lake (492) and Kikino (959), located within the census subdivision that are municipalities independent of Smoky Lake County.〔 With a land area of , it had a population density of in 2011. As a municipality in the 2011 Census, Smoky Lake County had a population of 2,459 without the two Métis settlements. In 2006, Smoky Lake County had a population of 3,357 living in 1,739 dwellings, a -24.0% increase from 2001. The county has a land area of and a population density of . As a municipality in the 2006 Census, Smoky Lake County had a population of 2,716 without the two Métis settlements. In 2001, the municipal district has a population of 4,417 in 2,104 dwellings, a 0.8% increase from 1996.
